Holding Them To Account 20 ; Daily Show Welcomes GOP In Style

The Daily Show has taken out a fantastic billboard advert in Minneapolis for the GOP convention.

Tell The Truthiness Says ; Expect Dick Cheney to be taking shots at it with his hunting rifle before the convention has even started.

Republican Debate ; Giuliani Blasts Off

No, we don't mean in the sense of getting angry, but jumping from certain subjects in a strange pattern.

In one answer about energy independence, he went from oil to national security to the moon. We might have misheard, but did he suggest the US has to go to the moon for the sake of national security?

Tell The Truthiness ; Is there oil on the moon?

War On Reality Part 61 ; Iraqi Government Says Surge Has Failed

The whole aim of the surge was that an increase in troops would lead to stability which would give leaders breathing space to achieve political progress.

But any political progress hasn't just stopped, it's gone backwards. If any evidence was needed, here it is; the Iraqi government has recognised that progress is just not possible and will not happen.

Tell The Truthiness ; Some predicted a "major breakthrough" in governing in Iraq. If progress ever does happen it will be methodical, plodding and agonisingly frustrating.

Senator Craig Judge Says 'No No, Then Yes Yes!'

Larry Craig today tried to change his guilty plea after his disorderly conduct charge three months ago.

Judge Charles Porter said that Senator Larry Craig's guilty plea was entered "accurately and intelligently" in June and was upheld.

We shall now have to wait and see how this impacts on the Senator's future. You'll remember when he said he would resign, then returned to work, so chances are there'll be some more twists in the tale.

Tell The Truthiness ; Don't let the door hit you in the wide stance on the way out!

It Might Be Free On-Air Promotion, But Its Funny

Senator Larry Craig Resignation

After being treated like a leper by the GOP, Senator Larry Craig resigned this lunchtime.

Tell The Truthiness ; He didn't help himself by pleading guilty to start with when he has since admitted that he didn't do anything wrong. So why do it?

Holding Them To Account 5 ; Patriot Act Proviso

That huge lump of legislation that was dumped on the US in late 2001 was initially believed to be for domestic security protection, dig deeper and you'll find concerning aspects.

The Los Angeles Times has found a piece in the PATRIOT Act which allows Alberto Gonzales to decide if the counsel given to death row inmates is appropriate and additional small print is being finalised to give him extra say in these ultimate decisions.

Tell The Truthiness ; Will Alberto be gone before he gets a chance to use these powers for evil?

Holding Them To Account 3 ; Rove Jumps Overboard

A bit later than we expected to update with video of his resignation speech, here's Mr Rove's little party piece.

It shows just how disciplined the message of Bush being moulded as a war president with the constant references to conflict.

Tell The Truthiness ; We can't wait for the legal proceedings.

War On Reality Part 30 ; We Don't Recall Having Any Respect For You For A Long Time

The ability to not recall any past events on Capitol Hill seems to be spreading from the Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to the Vice President Dick Cheney.

When asked by CNN's Larry King, Mr Cheney cannot recall authorising the hospital bed visit to John Ashcroft to push him to certify the intelligence gathering programme.

Tell The Truthiness ; 'I don't recall' is as worse than saying 'yes', have some guts Mr Cheney, if not, borrow some from Mr Chertoff, he's got plenty of guts (with feelings) to spare.

Queer Eye For The Labour Guy

Fellow bloggers akromatika and xakkd reminded us about poor colour co-ordination in political stories.

This picture shows former Prime Minister Tony Blair, wearing a red tie, making his last statement to Parliament, with his replacement Gordon Brown, wearing a blue tie, sitting next to him.

Mr Blair and Mr Brown's Labour Party colour is red, with the opposing party, the Conservatives settling on blue.

Tell The Truthiness ; Perhaps someone should have told Mr Brown to keep a united front and wear a red tie and not the colour of the opposition!
