War On Reality Part 88 ; Five Years Later From Mission Accomplished

This date marks five years since President Bush stood beneath a huge banner emblazoned with the legend Mission Accomplished. He said that major combat operations had finished in the country and that the US had won.

How wrong he was and how wrong he has been continually ever since. Some people rally against the critics of the current government headed by a guy who would be out of his depth in a puddle, but they forget to see the bigger picture. In decades, in centuries to come, historians and students will analyse this period in our history and say one thing.

"What the hell were the people doing to stop him and hold him to account?"

Indeed, since most people have noted the difficult choice between the first female president and the first black president, why not have both? A report into the voting machines due to be used in Ohio for the general election in November has found them open to tampering. A federally funded study found investigators could remove memory cards and put extra votes into the machine count.

Interestingly, Secretary Of State Jennifer Brunner called for replacement machines to be optical scan machines, which involve manually filled out paper ballots.

Supreme Court DC Handguns ; A GOP Election Present?

The ramblings of Rudy Giuliani, the Oprah Obama backing, the runaway train of Hillary Clinton, things don't look good for the Republicans, except for Ron Paul.

But there is one chink of light that may give the GOP a chance, handguns.

Yes, not gay marriage or stem cell research, but handguns. The US Supreme Court will have final say as to whether the District Of Columbia can ban handguns. The DC area has had a ban on handguns since 1976.

Everyone's favourite booby-prize candidate, Rudy Giuliani may be painting himself as Mr 9/11, but the opinion of one 9/11 Commission Co-Chairman doesn't think so.

Thomas H. Kean, former New Jersey Governor and co-chair of the 9/11 commission has thrown his backing for President behind Senator John McCain.

The scene of this public endorsement wasn't a town hall, or on the steps of a courthouse, but at Boston's Logan Airport, the location that Flight 11 and Flight 175 departed from before crashing into the World Trade Center towers.

Rudy Giuliani couldn't be reached for comment, rumours that he might have been meeting the President to try and link the Boston Tea Party and the Civil War to 9/11 and al-Qaeda have remained speculation.

In an ABC News/Washington Post poll in Iowa, Senator Obama was ranked more trustworthy and honest, beating Senator Clinton by 2-1.

Judith Regan, who used to work for News Corporation, has filed a lawsuit which claims she was asked to lie to protect Rudy Giuliani's presidential race.

Regan argues that she was told, by a senior executive, to lie to federal investigators about an affair she had as part of a campaign to protect Giuliani.

Yes, our man of the moment, Rudy Giuliani has stated that he is not sure if waterboarding can be classified as torture.

Now, really he just had to take a leaf or two out of the President's book and cover himself by :

1 . Firstly refuse to discuss specific torture techniques.

2 . Get your attorney general to reclassify torture or anything that everyone else apart from you declares to be torture as not torture.

A leaked memo from testimony given by the former New York Mayor, Rudy Giuliani to the 9/11 commission shows that he lied about his knowledge of terrorism.

He is reported in the 9/11 commission memo to have not known about al-Qaeda until after the attacks and that "we had nothing like this".

But in a speech he made at Regent University he said he'd been "studying terrorism" for more than 30 years.

Much has been made in the past few days on President Bush's meeting on climate change.

He did say that he took climate change seriously. But nearly all of the countries he invited oppose his wish for voluntary cuts in emissions, as they all believe mandatory cuts are the best option. With fifteen months left, many people are looking to the next government to achieve real traction on global warming and minimising it's effect.

That's right, the far right commentator Ann Coulter (she's so right wing she could come all the way round to the left wing if she's not more careful) was making a speech about the prospective US Presidential candidates for 2008. When getting round to John Edwards (the Democrat who ran as John Kerry's Vice President candidate in 2004) she said, well, take a look.



For those out of the loop, she was referring to the on set spat on the popular medical drama Grey's Anatomy , which resulted in one of the cast members seeking counseling for reportedly calling a fellow actor a faggot.

The US We All Remember......

Yesterday Illinois Senator Barack Obama made it official his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for President. He made his declaration on the steps of the Old State Captiol, Springfield where President Lincoln made his famous 'divided house to stand together' speech.

Despite all the apparent hype that the media is saying is the sole reason for him being swept along, that he is young and inexperienced, there's one thing that is heavily on his side.

People like him.

They actually believe in what he talks about and the way he speaks about it.

For those outside the US and those within it's borders that have a memory that goes back further than September 2001, this is the type of US the rest of the World admires and wishes we get back to sooner rather than later.
